Qualifications, Programmes and Units
Qualifications
Quartz provides a highly flexible model for the definition and recording
of 'rules of combination' which automatically
handles even the most complex definitions, i.e. not only complex optional
and mandatory unit-groups but also RPL, equivalences, exemptions and
'other'.
The identification of qualification achievement is fully automated –
including fully automatic application and testing of any combinations of
multiple mandatory and optional elements. Overall marks for an achievement
can be calculated based on weighted marks for individual units and
weightings for modules. Related qualifications (e.g. different levels) can
be formally linked and related to registration and achievement.
Units
The 'unit' - which is typically a fully defined 'unit of accredited
learning', but can also be a test (including national tests) or any other
element of achievement - lies at the heart of Quartz. Units - and their
fully formatted outcome/assessment content - are defined once, and can then
be used in multiple qualifications and programmes. Units can be coded using
local and national coding schemes, with automated coding against sectors.
Quartz can store and manage unit content where required, this makes full use
of the version control and tracking of the built-in document management
functions.
Programmes and Programme development
Quartz provides a full set of functionality to define large or small
programmes of learning using a full hierarchy of pathways (specific to
programmes), modules (reusable groups of related units), and stand-alone
units. The relationship between programmes and qualifications can be
maintained (e.g. a single programme of learning may typically be able to
lead to one or more qualifications, or sometimes a single qualification at
different levels).
